Real Estate yes, but not like back home

Being from Colombia but having lived in the US for the last 19 years has given me a unique view on the real estate market in Mexico from the perspective of a Spanish speaking foreigner.

Tulum and vowed to return to live in this paradise for good. Since I was fluent in Spanish, or so I thought, I felt comfortable and confident enough that there would be no actual transitional period from New York to Tulum. I felt that my love and determination would help me overcome all difficulties… and it did. But the lessons learnt are important enough for me to want to share, since I believe that those who are thinking of buying property here, whether to live or to expand their portfolios, will benefit from them. Resilience, or once ability to bounce back from the immediate set backs encountered in Tulum, is of the greatest importance...

A Day in Tulum

Visiting Tulum doesn’t have to be limited to seeing the ruins, not to say that that’s not a wonderful option, but there’s just so much more. The fact is that there are tons of things to do for anyone, tourists and locals alike. There are many ways to spend a day in this little corner of paradise, and on this edition I’ll take you through some of them.

I’ll assume you’ll want to come on Saturday; the road trip goes as follows: Wake up, have a cup of coffee, jump in the car, with your girlfriend, boyfriend or family, and head to Azafran for breakfast...

Cenotes Tulum

Cenotes are magical, enigmatic and unique in the world and were once the only resource for fresh water in the local Yucatan jungle. They were the sacred places of the Maya for that reason, but also because they represented the entrance to the underworld.

Cenotes are fresh water pools connecting to submerged caverns and other cenotes. The standard formation is a round hole in the ground...

SianKaan Tulum

The beaches of the Sian Ka’an Biosphere are a continuation of Tulum’s beaches, extending south to Punta Allen. Raw and natural, the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve is a 1.3 million acre wilderness area with miles of remote uninhabited beaches. Some are placid and protected while others are exposed and turbulent. All are spectacular in their own way. The coastal road south of the Tulum ruins (Known as the Boca Paila road) is the primary access, leading to the stone archway some 6 miles (10km) south of the ruins...

A Day at the Beach in Tulum

Visiting Tulum doesn’t have to be limited to seeing ruins, or even the amazing cenotes, which to happen to be two excellent options, but there is one other and less traveled path: The beach. A day at the beach in Tulum is an unforgettable experience. And not just for foreigners, but also for those of us who live here in the Riviera Maya and those staying in nearby towns.

For me Tulum has the best beaches in the Riviera. And I’m not exaggerating. Imagine walking for miles over powder-soft sand...

It looks the same, but most of it isn’t

A large percentage of our clients come into our office much the same way I did a few years back, with little to no knowledge of the type of land available in Tulum. When we tell them that much of it is still ejido, I immediately hear their mental gears come to a grinding halt. The word ejido can be a monkey wrench to many, but not to all. And the second difference, which also takes a little getting used to, is that Tulum is positioned within the Restricted Zone. Understanding these unique aspects of the region will make your purchase process a much more comfortable one...
