A day at the beach in TulumVisiting Tulum doesn’t have to be limited to seeing ruins, or even the amazing cenotes, which to happen to be two excellent options, but there is one other and less traveled path: The beach. A day at the beach in Tulum is an unforgettable experience. And not just for foreigners, but also for those of us who live here in the Riviera Maya and those staying in nearby towns. For me Tulum has the best beaches in the Riviera. And I’m not exaggerating. Imagine walking for miles over powder-soft sand, barely anyone else around, only small boutique hotels and private homes lining the shore line, plenty of open spaces, sky and palm trees everywhere you look, no noise pollution anywhere, no boats in the ocean to block your view, no yet skis, no airplanes flying by, only graceful pelicans and seagulls high above, flying back and forth along the shore. I know that Cancun has an amazing ocean, and that some hotels even have some of the softest sand you’ll ever have caress your toes, but the skyline will not be the same as in Tulum and you’ll never be alone on the beach. And Playa del Carmen, well good luck walking on whatever beach is left. Tulum today offers the best of both worlds. Say that you’re not interested in being all alone walking up and down the beach, you want the beach, the sand, the empty ocean, but you also want some action, the open spaces and some attitude, a little music, and some people whom to mingle with, like at a beach club, well we do have some spots, and here’s what I’d recommend. The places I like most are: El Paraiso Beach (near the ruins), Ana y Jose Beach Club, and Ak’iin. Now, obviously you can pretty much access the beach through any hotel and sit on their “camastros” while you sip on a drink you got from their bar, but at the beach club it’s full service, and great vibe. It’s their specialty. El Paraiso beach has the widest and longest beach around. Their bar is in the center of everything, the bartenders are good and friendly, the servers are the same, and always around to cater to your every need. There’s also good music, which I always enjoy. And their kitchen has the perfect mix of dishes for a day of sun bathing, drinking, lounging, and enjoying the beauty of this paradise. Ana y Jose Beach Club is smaller than Paraiso, although not in a bad way, in fact I really enjoy the coziness of this beach club. The service is also great, and you’ll be pleased with the menu choices. There’s great music all day long and I guarantee you won’t want to leave at the end of the day. Finally there’s Ak’iin: great design, great service, and great food. I find Ak’iin is the beach club where you’ll have the most privacy, it’s slightly bigger than Ana y Jose and the beds and chairs are more spaced out. Unlike the other two places, here the day spills into the night. At night the lighting design turns this part of the beach into an open air lounge, with great music and a relax atmosphere. The best day to come to Ak’iin is on Saturdays, when they have their official Saturday Night Party. See you in Tulum. Back to Home |
