Cenotes TulumCenotes are magical, enigmatic and unique in the world and were once the only resource for fresh water in the local Yucatan jungle. They were the sacred places of the Maya for that reason, but also because they represented the entrance to the underworld.Cenotes are fresh water pools connecting to submerged caverns and other cenotes. The standard formation is a round hole in the ground. The cenote at Chichen Itza is a perfect example of the round sinkhole formation. This cenote is probably the best known and most visited as it is located at the Chichen Itza ruin, in the town of Merida, and it is easily accessible. Often referred to as lagoons or ponds, and although scattered across the Yucatan peninsula, are most common in the Mayan Riviera (the land strip from Cancun to Tulum). The entire peninsula of the Yucatan consists of limestone. Over millions of years the rain water has permeated the porous stone forming caves, passageways and huge caverns. Open cenotes are actually collapsed entrances leading to the underground rivers that run through this part of Mexico and form the largest interconnected cave and cavern systems in the world. The Mayans called these sinkholes "Dzonot" (sacred well), thus the Spanish word cenote. Local Maya and tourists come to open cenotes to snorkel and swim in total sunshine, and enjoy the exposure to this amazing natural aquarium filled with beautifully colored fish and other incredible wild life. Partially closed cenotes have some areas in full sunshine and others under ceiling where less light penetrate, so it can get a little chili. Some open cenotes can be difficult to access but others, privately owned and operated, have set up walkways and docks leading into the water that make this whole experience so much more enjoyable. The fresh water of a cenote is crystal clear and around 76°F all year round. The caverns and caves of a cenote are highly decorated with stalactites (hang from the ceiling) and stalagmites. These delicate thin structures or in some instances massive columns abound in the secret depths of the cenote. The varying colors of the sediments and the walls supply every single cenote with a distinctive painting. And looking back at the entrance you will see the amazing interplay of light and water. The beauty of these lost worlds is breathtaking. Back to Home |
